Our team discovered chocolate makers Erik and Ariane Hansen at a local festival. We were instantly impressed with the quality of their chocolate, showcasing a complex acidity that highlighted origin characteristics so we had to bring some in to offer.

Our third collaboration bar with the team at DesBarres. We were thrilled with our collaboration bar from the past 2 years so we were excited to do another. This time Erik had been inspired by one of our seasonal coffees, Muthuthini AA, a lovely washed Kenyan coffee. He decided to pair it with his Semuliki chocolate as it also comes from Africa. The coffee was milled in with the chocolate to really incorporate it together seamlessly. Through this collaboration and combo, the name Kahawa Rafiki was inspired which means “coffee friend” in Swahili. Initially included with our 2025 Advent Calendar, it is now available for everyone!

For the nerds: we specifically requested that the bars for this combo were made from the same batch and then split in two, one half to be combined with the coffee, the other half to be made as ‘Semuliki’ so folks can directly compare this chocolate with, and without the coffee.

From DesBarres Chocolate:

"This 72% dark chocolate bar features beans from the Bundibugyo region in Western Uganda. The cacao resulted in a slightly darker chocolate in colour and very distinct flavour from any of our other bars. We taste flavours that include spice and jammy fruits, or even a mulled wine, on a background of deep chocolate.

This cacao is grown by 1,002 organic smallholder farmers in the Bundibugyo region, 52% of whom are women. Latitude Trade Co. (LTC), the company that processes and exports this cacao, has organized 6 rural collection points for farmers to access, where they sell fresh cacao weekly into the network and receive cash at the point of sale."
